'There Will Be Blood' Screenshot Study

Uni is finally over, not hugely happy with the work I created but I must press on.

I thought I best get back to good old screenshot studies as they have a lot of interesting composition/colour.

This was a tough one. I tried to spend longer than usual but the dirt and blood and oil...just got the better of me!

W.I.P's as usual. Bit of jump in one because I didn't save as many iterations as usual. I also tried a different set up this time. Had the image directly under the original and did rough lineart first.

Always hate this stage...

Getting proportions etc

Oh ma gurrd! It looks like Daniel Day Lewis

Judgement Time - 'Dredd' Film Screenshot Study

"You know how often we get a Judge up here in Peach Trees?"

"Well you've got one now"

I do love the new Dredd film. I saw it for the third time the other day and It made me realise how simple yet well done it is.

So here is a Dredd study. It probably took me the best part of 3 hours or so. But yeah, Eventually it turned out ok but my god...it looked bad in the beginning. I take so long with everything. I've included steps so if anyone happens to be reading this, maybe they can throw me some tips to speed things up. Most likely it's just more practice.

Jack Character Sheet (Expressions)

The 7 universal facial expressions - happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, surprise and contempt. I wanted to show my character emoting each one as they will be useful for reference when I go on to create the finished illustration.

'The Signal' Film Screenshot Study

I didn't time myself for this. I actually wanted to just try and do a nice study. Harder than I thought...

Steps included. Now you can see how bad it looks before it gets anywhere!

Jack Andrews Orthographic and Final Concept

The character is fairly simple as he's a regular guy in a present day setting. The concept shows him in a standard set of clothing he could be seen wearing. I wanted to say as much about the character as I could from wearing standard clothing. As a person, he yearns attention internally. Although me may not show this in his personality he may subconsciously reflect this externally (visually). Thus he has a slight alternate style as he craves attention internally. Aspects such as the tattoo and t-shirt show his love for space (openness - see the big 5 dimensions), with the tattoo further suggesting he is a loving person, with the use of the rose.

When I have to show the character in different emotional situations it will be clearer the type of person he really is.

Sketch Dump 1

I don't sketch enough. These have been in my sketchbook for a while now and posting them here as 'Sketch Dump 1' should give me incentive to fill this blog up with more. It's a nice break from digital.

1 Hour Screenshot Studies

The Prize? An 'Art of Daarken' book and second place gets the 'Art of Assassins Creed III' book. The competition is to do 5 film studies at 1 hour each. I do studies when I can but when there are prizes involved, count me in!

This is the 1 hour study of a screenshot from Alien. It had to be capped at this time which was a challenge as I haven't really timed myself before. It is very rough, and I have 4 more to do from different films so you can expect this post to be updated with the rest.

Oh yeah, and welcome to my blog! First post and i'm hoping I can keep it updated regularly. If you wish to see other older works (which might be bad for your health) you can check the deviant art page:
